Jekyll liked to mix blues in among cream whites and pale yellows; purple and lilacs she grouped together with pure whites and silver-gray foliages. She might run the whole spectrum in a single long border, but when she did, she took care to let the hues evolve through intermediate steps—blues, both light and dark, might intermix with pale yellow and white, which in turn could shade into pale pink, then rose, crimson, and scarlet, finishing in orange and bright yellow. To understand what she believed were nature’s harmonies, Jekyll suggested that novices might study the blossom colors of different cultivars within some floral grouping such as a particular strain of azaleas or a race of irises. She was vociferous in her dislike of intense, bright colors, calling them “garish,” praising the “true and delicate.”

“The colours,” Jekyll wrote in a magazine article, “should be placed with careful forethought and deliberation, as a painter employs them on his picture.”

Interestingly, she was contemptuous of the “laws … laid down by chemists and decorators about colours which artists laugh at”; “to consider them,” she added, “is a waste of time.” Apparently, she was unaware of Turner’s debt to the analysts.
